Summary

#AEEPYouth

The Africa-EU Energy Partnership (AEEP) is a long-term framework for strategic dialogue between Africa and the EU aimed at sharing knowledge and setting political priorities. To reach these goals young people remain an anchor to innovation and new ideas. Therefore, the involvement of the youth is crucial. The AEEP has developed a dynamic youth programme to ensure the “voices of tomorrow” are incorporated and heard at the highest level of political dialogue.

To strengthen the capacities of young people, the AEEP used the Second Stakeholder Forum held in Milan, Italy from 16 to 17 May 2016 as a mayor opportunity to empower youth and to create a sustainable and affordable future in the field of energy.

Together with the Africa-EU Renewable Energy Copperation Programme (RECP) and the Finnish University Partnership for International Development (UniPID), the AEEP selected 10 young scientists and entrepreneurs to contribute to the Second Stakeholder Forum. During a Science and Business Slam, they shared their ideas and research addressing energy related topics with a wide group of energy experts. The performance of all participants was outstanding and enabled them to engage further with several forum participants interested in their work. The list of young scientists and entrepreneurs and information on their projects can be found here.

In addition, a group of nine young motivated journalists were selected to contribute to the reporting of the conference together with the AEEP communication team. The Young Journalists successfully produced press releases, photos, video clips and interviews and made use of social media channels. After the conference, the Young Journalists submitted stories, interviews, and reports to their own countries to create visibility for the achievements and challenges African countries face in delivering energy services to their population.
The Second Stakeholder Forum was one step of the AEEP towards the empowerment of youth. The youth programme is constantly being extended to ensure the skills and capacities of future leaders are being strengthened.
