AEEP - Energy Business Dialogue Uganda

AEEP - Energy Business Dialogue Uganda

13 December, 2012 to 14 December, 2012

East Africa

More than 90 participants representing private sector, civil society, research institutes, financial institutions, and government gathered at the Energy Business Dialogue Uganda in Kampala on 13-14 December 2012.

Focusing on increased private sector participation in the design of energy policies and strategies in Uganda, the Energy Business Dialogue built up on one of the main outcomes of the Africa-EU Energy Partnership (AEEP) Stakeholder Forum in Cape Town in May 2012: the stronger involvement of stakeholders at country-level.

Held at a time when Uganda has been at the center of discussions in relation to its involvement in the Sustainable Energy for All Initiative, the event intended to bridge the gaps between non-state actors and public institutions. The event was organised to address a wide range of issues such as the legal and policy framework for business action, financial mechanisms facilitating investment in renewable energy projects and the role of small and medium sized renewable energy enterprises in the policy formulation process. Therefore, the dialogue featured expert presentations on private sector perspectives and financial prospects from private and public sector as well as academia.

During a series of  discussions and interactive workshops, key challenges and opportunities for the Ugandan private energy sector were identified. These resulted in concrete recommendations to Ugandan authorities, the AEEP and the Sustainable Energy for All Initiative as well as in the formulation of a common way forward.

The opportunity to establish closer links to businesses, financial institutions and public authorities, to learn from regional experiences and to directly contribute to shaping the Ugandan Energy framework conditions and respective initiatives was greatly appreciated by all participants.

The dialogue event was co-organized jointly by the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development (MEMD), GIZ-PREEEP Uganda, and the EU Energy Initiative Partnership Dialogue Facility (EUEI PDF). It was hosted by the government of Uganda.
