The European Union (EU) is a leading global donor in the field of energy and development cooperation. At present, the European Commission has allocated more than €3 billion to future actions on energy and development. EU member states are also major donors in sustainable energy, both bilaterally as well as to multi-level initiatives.
The EU Energy Initiative for Poverty Eradication and Sustainable Development (EUEI) was established in 2002 as a joint commitment by EU member states and the European Commission to promote the role of energy in development. In light of the evolving institutional landscape in the field of energy and development cooperation (e.g. SE4All, SDG7) , the EUEI PDF was asked to assist in the revitalisation of the EUEI. The aim thereby is to enhance exchange, facilitate coordination and optimise the flow of information for coherence, effectiveness and efficiency in European energy development cooperation.
This support, coordinated on a day-to-day basis with the European Commission’s Directorate-General for International Cooperation and Development (DG DEVCO) (EuropeAid), which acts as the secretariat for the EUEI, is provided on demand and includes the following services:
- Support to the EUEI Secretariat
- Policy dialogue and coordination
- Advisory services to EU Member States
- Information sharing, analysis and visibility
