Summary

On the 2nd of June the European Commission’s EUEI Secretariat hosted the second EU Energy Initiative Advisory Board meeting of 2016. The regular meeting brings together Member States, the EUEI Secretariat, and the EUEI Partnership Dialogue Facility to discuss and coordinate European activities in energy development cooperation.

Participants of the meeting discussed a range of issues, including the outcomes of the recent African Development Bank Group’s meeting, activities within the African Renewable Energy Initiative and the success of the Second Stakeholder Forum of the Africa-EU Energy Partnership (AEEP), held in Milan in May and supported by the EUEI PDF. Closer to home, colleagues also learned about the priorities of the forthcoming Slovakian presidency of the Council of the European Union, as well as from other projects and initiatives supporting renewable energy in development cooperation such as the EU’s ElectriFI initiative.

Importantly the meeting also offered an opportunity for Member States and the European Commission to learn more about the further development of the UN’s Sustainable Energy for All (SE4All) initiative. Launched by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, SE4All aims to provide universal access to modern energy services, to double the global rate of improvement in energy efficiency, and to double the share of renewable energy in the global energy mix by 2030. The initiative enjoys strong, high-level support from the European Union, including dedicated funding to meet the EU’s pledge of helping developing countries provide access to sustainable energy services to 500 million people by 2030. A meeting of SE4All’s Advisory Board took place during the European Development Days, hosted by the European Commission.

As ever the EUEI Advisory Board meeting offered a timely and productive platform for information exchange and coordination on the many activities of the EU and its Member States in this area. The next meeting will take place in October, in preparation for the COP22 summit in Marrakesh.

Presentations from the meeting can be found here and on the EUEI page on Capacity4Development.
