Over the past ten years, the EUEI PDF has supported more than 100 projects, including 68 studies and 41 dialogue events, to improve the enabling environment for sustainable energy in over 21 countries across three continents.
The EUEI PDF currently offers four distinct service lines:
The EUEI PDF’s Strategic Energy Advisory and Dialogue Services (SEADS) provide assistance to governmental institutions in developing countries by supporting the integration of renewable energy, energy efficiency and energy access into national and regional policies and strategies. The EUEI PDF’s thematically broad activities contribute to knowledge sharing and facilitate upstream policy dialogue between practitioners, experts, civil society and decision-makers at the national, regional and international level.
The EUEI PDF also hosts the Secretariat of the Africa-EU Energy Partnership (AEEP). The AEEP is an important element in the Joint Africa-EU Strategy (JAES) that provides a powerful forum for dialogue between decision-makers of the two continents, and a framework in which policies and projects can be implemented with high levels of delivery, involving a wide range of stakeholders.
The EUEI PDF implements the Africa-EU Renewable Energy Cooperation Programme (RECP), aiming to tap the vast renewable energy potential in Africa and accelerate private investment in renewable energy to meet the continent’s future energy needs. The EUEI PDF carries out RECP activities in Policy Advisory, Private Sector Cooperation, Access to Finance, and Innovation and Skills Development.
In light of recent developments in the global discourse on sustainable energy, the EUEI PDF also assists in the revitalisation of the EU Energy Initiative (EUEI), coordinated on a day-to-day basis with the European Commission’s Directorate-General for International Cooperation and Development (DG DEVCO). To enhance exchange and coordination in the EU, the EUEI PDF provides on-demand advisory services to the EUEI Secretariat and EU Member States, as well as research and analysis on issues relevant to energy and development in the EU.
The EUEI PDF is hosted by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH at its headquarters in Eschborn and Bonn, Germany, with further offices in Brussels and Addis Abeba. The EUEI PDF is coordinated by a programme management unit including finance and administrative support, while the majority of our staff work directly in the four service lines. The EUEI PDF works directly with partner organisations to develop project activities, for which it contracts expert services and provides financial and administrative management.
In Brussels, the EUEI PDF organises expert discussions and forums on key topics in the energy sector and hosts meetings relevant to the AEEP, RECP and EUEI.
