Support geothermal training at 4th African Rift Geothermal Conference

Support geothermal training at 4th African Rift Geothermal Conference

19 November, 2012 to 23 November, 2012

East Africa

This type of activity was part of the RECP start-up phase and is now being offered under the Service Line SEADS.

The EUEI PDF provided support to 15 Government officials responsible for geothermal development from 6 different countries (Burundi, Comoros, Djibouti, DRC, Malawi, Zambia) to participate in short courses in the context of the 4th African Rift Geothermal Conference (ARGeo-C4). The short courses offered were:

  • Geoscience Exploration Techniques, Drilling Technology and Reservoir Engineering facilitated by University of Auckland, New Zealand;
  • Planning, Managing and Financing of Geothermal Projects facilitated by USAID; and
  • Geothermal Database Management for East Africa facilitated by ISOR though the support of Icelandic International development Agency (ICEIDA).

These trainings filled the gaps of the capacity of the East African countries and strengthened the institutional and infrastructural capacities to start execution of surface exploration activities in the year 2013.

The Third Meeting of the “ARGeo Steering Committee” took also place with representatives from UNEP (ROA and DTIE), ARGeo member countries (except Eritrea), and some partners (ICEIDA, BGR, UNU-GTP). During the meeting, members of the committee endorsed the new structure, members and implementation modality of the GEF-Funded stand-alone UNEP-ARGeo Project. The members approved the project: (a) five year strategy, and (b) 2012-13 work plan which included starting implementation of surface exploration studies by first quarter of 2013.

ARGeo-C4 was held in Nairobi, Kenya, on 19-23 November 2012, hosted by the Government of Kenya, organized by the Geothermal Association of Kenya, endorsed by the International Geothermal Association.
