European Development Days 2016, Cities Alliance, Covenant of Mayors
The European Development Days (EDD) are Europe’s leading forum on development and international cooperation. The EUEI PDF organised one of the sessions for the 2016 edition on 16 June that falls under the event’s category Prosperity - Inclusive, Sustainable and Resilient Cities.
The session, Future Energy Scenarios for African Cities – Unlocking Opportunities for Climate Responsive Development in partnership with Cities Alliance and representatives from the Covenant of Mayors Africa, provided an opportunity for speakers and participants to actively contribute to a new project exploring future scenarios and opportunities for low carbon and climate resilient development in African cities.
During the session, the project lab explored how energy and climate change issues can be addressed through Africa’s urbanisation. During the interactive workshop, speakers and participants tested the provisional results of a scenario building process to assess alternative futures which can be used to inform the policy debate and support city leaders in taking the appropriate decisions to achieve low carbon development in their constituencies.
The EUEI PDF is looking into actively contributing to shaping the global agenda by providing city leaders with concrete policy options and support for the implementation at local level. Currently, a thematic study is being conducted in cooperation with the consultancy Atkins, aiming at exploring how effective solutions can be developed for African cities.
The project lab provided an opportunity for participants to engage around the future trends affecting African cities, to bring their experiences and explore potential pathways and opportunities to support low carbon climate resilient development. The session was guided by the following objectives:
Sharing outcomes of the initial stages of the project;
Exchanging perspectives on the emerging scenarios and their significance;
Discussing the implications of the scenarios and what this means for city leaders, policy makers and other stakeholders in terms of relevant actions
