Strategy for Introducing Renewable Energy Technologies in Angola

Region: West Africa, Country: Angola, Status: completed

Angola – Strategy for the introduction of renewable energy technologies

Despite the fact that oil and gas is the main focus of Angola’s energy activities, renewable energy has become a new but rapidly growing issue of interest in the country. In particular, but not limited to, for the provision of reliable and sustainable modern energy services in peri-urban and rural areas, where the provision of petroleum-based energy products can be unreliable.

Upon request of the Ministry of Science and Technology in Angola, EUEI PDF carried out a study in order to analyze and explore Angola’s priorities in the renewable energy sector with the objective of developing a strategy for the introduction of renewable energy technologies.  As the issue of renewable energy is relatively new, the current study focused on the development of knowledge about technologies in order to enable the Ministry of Science and Technology to act as a Center of Excellence for the Angolan government in the identification of suitable technologies for various sections of the Angolan population.

A Draft Strategy was presented to stakeholders at a National Conference on Science and Technology in October 2009.
